Expectant Couple Overcomes Breast Cancer Diagnosis with Surrogate’s Help
Shared from IVF Babble
Sarrah Strimel Bentley had always dreamed of becoming a mother. At 38 years old, she seemed to be in perfect health, until she discovered a lump in her left breast. The diagnosis came back as stage 2 invasive ductal carcinoma, and Sarrah was faced with the fear and uncertainty of battling breast cancer
Along with the devastating news, Sarrah’s doctor also informed her that her fertility could be affected by the cancer treatment. Having always wanted to be a mother, the thought of losing that possibility was heartbreaking.
Fortunately Sarrah’s doctor referred her to a fertility specialist, who discussed options for preserving her fertility. She underwent two rounds of in vitro fertilization (IVF) with her then-boyfriend James Bentley, resulting in a single embryo. She also had multiple surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation as part of her cancer treatment.
Despite the challenges, Sarrah remained hopeful for her future family
Her oncologist advised her that a surrogate would be the best option to bring the baby to life. Sarrah documented her surrogacy journey and, with the support of her now-husband James, finally found a surrogate named Whitney.
The couple anxiously awaited the news of a successful embryo transfer, and when they received the confirmation, their joy knew no bounds. Sarrah described it as the most incredible moment of her life.
Dr. Elisa Port, a breast cancer specialist, praised Sarrah’s surrogacy journey as a testament to the advancements of science and medicine. She emphasized that women undergoing breast cancer treatment now have the opportunity to preserve their chances of parenthood and have a child.
Today, Sarrah and her husband are eagerly anticipating the arrival of their baby boy. She has also launched a nonprofit organization to help other breast cancer survivors navigate the surrogacy process. She hopes to inspire other women facing breast cancer not to lose hope.
Dr. Jessica Shepherd, an OB-GYN, emphasized the importance of early diagnosis in breast cancer cases and the available options for preserving fertility. She highlighted surrogacy and cryopreservation (egg freezing) as viable choices for women facing breast cancer.
Sarrah’s story serves as a beacon of hope for breast cancer survivors, reminding them that their dreams of motherhood can still come true despite the challenges they face.
