A national campaign in the US is fighting to help keep the rights of anyone who wants IVF following the Roe vs Wade law being overturned in 2022.
The Fight for Families campaign was launched by the American National Infertility charity, RESOLVE, and is lobbying to keep IVF available across all 50 states in the US.
RESOLVE hopes that sharing stories of real people on social media and in the media, will have an impact on the decision of any potential states that might be thinking of changing their current stance on access to IVF.
A statement on the RESOLVE website said: “While Roe vs. Wade is known as the constitutional right to have an abortion, the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn it in June 2022 put the reproductive autonomy of millions of people into jeopardy.
“With Roe vs. Wade no longer law, state lawmakers now have the power to introduce and pass new legislation intended to restrict or ban abortion that may include language that is unclear or specifically targets in-vitro embryos. This poses serious threats to important treatments like IVF and could make care inaccessible, unaffordable, and potentially illegal.”
Someone who needed help to conceive following IVF was Jacqueline, from Michigan. She experienced a devastating ectopic pregnancy.
She said: “Words cannot express the heartbreak of finding out the pregnancy we had desperately wanted for 18 months was ectopic and not viable. I cannot imagine how it would have felt to live through the grief of my ectopic pregnancy while having to push for access to the medication that would save my fallopian tube and my life. Because I live in a state where I was able to receive treatment immediately, my chances of becoming a mother in the future are still high. My only worry is that by the time we have exhausted all other options and IVF is the only option left for us to bring life into this world, that option could be gone.”
“To me, access to reproductive healthcare is the pro-life perspective. Pro my life, and pro the lives of my (hopeful) future children. If I had not had immediate access to a medically necessary abortion, my future fertility and even my life would have been in danger. I am so thankful that between my ectopic and now, voters in my state approved a constitutional provision upholding the right to reproductive care, a right that before then was in immediate danger of being struck down. I feel lucky that my hopes to become a mom, and even the safety of my life, are not in nearly as much danger as those who are trying to conceive in some other states.”
Barbara Collura, RESOLVE president, and CEO said: “We are in an unprecedented time in which the future of reproductive rights and access to IVF is uncertain. With legislation proposed across the country that may threaten family building options, it is critical that we remain vigilant to ensure that IVF remains accessible and legal.”
