This week (October 9) will mark the 20th annual Baby Loss Awareness Week, a special yearly event held to remember babies lost in pregnancy or during or soon after birth and to raise public awareness of pregnancy and baby loss
More than 100 charities will raise awareness of baby loss and people will share their stories via social media of miscarriage, ectopic and molar pregnancy, and also post messages of comfort and support.
The theme of this year’s week will be stepping stones. The hope is that anyone who may have experienced baby loss will feel supported by the community every step of the way, during and after the loss.
One of the charities taking part is the Miscarriage Association.
An MA spokeswoman said: “Like any other week, we will be here to provide support and information to anyone affected by pregnancy loss, however recent or long ago. If you would like to talk with one of our helpline support workers – by phone, email or live chat.
“While this week can be a special time of remembrance, the increase in social media activity around pregnancy and baby loss can understandably feel overwhelming for some. Do take some time out from social media during the week, if and whenever you need to.
Baby Loss Awareness Week demonstrates the strength of the pregnancy and baby loss community in being there for people during and after loss. Each year, we are touched by the way the community comes together to share stories, offer support, and raise awareness of the impact of pregnancy and baby loss.”
A global wave of light will take place on October 15 where people will be asked to light a candle to mark their own loss. Photos can be uploaded to social media and it is hoped a wave of light can be created. The hashtag for the event is #waveoflight.
